2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz WiFi: which band should you use?

Almost every home router broadcasts on two bands at once, and which one your device happens to be using can easily be the difference between 30 Mbps and 300 Mbps. Most people never check, and a lot of "my WiFi is slow" turns out to be a phone sitting on the wrong band three metres from the router.

The trade-off in one paragraph

2.4 GHz travels further and passes through walls and floors much better, but it is slow and badly overcrowded: it has only three non-overlapping channels, and it shares its airspace with microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, Bluetooth and every neighbour within range.

5 GHz is several times faster and has far more channels, so it is much less congested. The cost is range: it fades faster with distance and is absorbed more heavily by walls, especially brick and concrete.

Newer routers may also offer 6 GHz (Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7). Think of it as 5 GHz taken further - even faster, almost completely empty today because so few devices use it, and even shorter range. If your phone and router both support it and you're in the same room, it's the best connection in the house.

The rule of thumb

The honest summary: use 5 GHz unless distance forces you onto 2.4 GHz.

How to tell which one you're on

If your router gives the bands separate names, it's obvious - the 5 GHz one usually ends in "5G" or "-5". If both bands share a single name, your phone's WiFi settings often won't tell you at all, and you need to look at the channel number your device reports: channels 1 to 14 are 2.4 GHz, channels 32 and above are 5 GHz. Any WiFi analyser app will show you this directly, including ours.

When your device picks the wrong band

Routers that broadcast one name for both bands use "band steering" to nudge devices to the better one. It works reasonably well and fails in one predictable way: a device that first connected in a far corner lands on 2.4 GHz and then stays there after you walk back to the living room. Nothing forces it to reconsider while the connection still technically works.

Two ways to deal with it:

  1. Toggle WiFi off and on while near the router. The device re-evaluates and normally picks 5 GHz. Ten seconds, no configuration, but you may repeat it occasionally.
  2. Give the bands separate names in your router settings. You choose explicitly per device, forever. The trade-off is that you lose automatic switching when you move around the house, and you have to remember to put smart-home gadgets on the 2.4 GHz name during setup.
Which approach is right? If your house is small enough that the router covers it all, separate names give you certainty. If you have a mesh system or move between floors, leave the single name alone - seamless roaming is worth more than manual control, and mesh systems handle steering far better than single routers do.

If 5 GHz is still slow

Being on the right band doesn't guarantee a fast connection. If 5 GHz is slow in the same room as the router, the likely causes are a very wide channel colliding with neighbours (channel congestion), or a problem that isn't WiFi at all - try bufferbloat if it only happens during downloads, or slow DNS if pages are slow to start loading. And if 5 GHz simply can't reach where you need it, that's a coverage problem: see weak signal and dead spots.
